Moeun’s Story: “My First Bible Healed Something Inside Me”

There was a time when I believed I would never learn to read.
As a child growing up in Cambodia, I lived through the years of the Khmer Rouge. Schools disappeared. Teachers vanished. Learning became something dangerous—something lost. I remember the silence where voices of teaching used to be.

“I thought I would be ignorant forever.”

Then one day, someone invited me to a literacy class run by the Bible Society. I almost didn’t go.

But I went.

Every day, I practised. Slowly. Patiently. Letters became sounds. Sounds became words. Words became meaning.

Six months passed like this—step by step, learning what I once thought was impossible.

“I Cried… Something Healed Inside Me”

The day I received my certificate, I stood quietly, hardly believing I had made it that far. Then the course leader placed something into my hands.

A Bible.

“My first Bible.”

I held it carefully, as if it might disappear. And then the tears came.

“I cried,” I say. “Because something healed inside me.”

Passing It On

Today, I stand in front of a classroom—not as a student, but as a teacher.

I help children and adults learn to read, just as I once did. I see the same fear in their eyes… and the same quiet hope.

Sometimes a child hesitates, unsure. When that happens, I kneel beside them and speak softly:

“Jesus hears your prayer. No one is too small.”

A Story That Continues

What I once thought impossible has become my calling. From fear to faith. From silence to words. From darkness to understanding.

And it all began with learning to read—and holding my first Bible.

Because of your support, stories like mine are still being written.
