All Star United release their fifth album and right off the line they're labeling it 'good'.
The truth comes when you listen.
First up, that 'so-so' definition of 'good' is way off track. This is vintage ASU pumped up with an extra course of anti-coagulants. There's nothing sticky, slow or slouchy about this album, nothing average. It has all the musical chops you've come to love from the band; the Britpop bouncers, the airtight anthems and the rest of those blinders that strain against the speakers, desperate to be coming out live from a festival stack.
So, sound-wise, it's every bit as genius as it should be. What do you expect when songwriter and producer Ian Eskelin won last year's Dove Award for Producer of the Year?
What about the content? No question about it, ASU are flexing their muscles. They started out in 97 painting pictures of the life they saw around them. Now, a decade on and they're able to take it a step or two further; those pictures are not just observations, they're accompanied by the sort of questions that need to be aired. Love, commitment, humility... they all come under the lyrical microscope. And so ASU have become the big brother talking to the juniors, the wiser head who's been there and seen and done and experienced it all and who knows the pitfalls. We trust them, and that's good. With tunes that engage and energize and a focus that brings to light the issues that need to be examined these days, ASU have rolled out another winner.
I'd say that's pretty good, wouldn't you?
