Poverty in the 'Sertão' region

The north-east's metropolitan areas like Recife are surrounded by extremely destitute suburbs where poverty, famine, malnutrition, lack of healthcare, broken families and violence are the experience of so many.

The hinterland 'Sertão' region covers almost all of the north-east of Brazil. Equivalent to the area of Portugal, Spain and France, it experiences frequent periods of drought. Millions of people in this region depend on agriculture for survival but famine regularly occurs. More than 40% of the Brazilian poor live in this one region.

Access to basic health services and spiritual care is difficult. People cannot afford to travel to where these services are easily available. Therefore, we need your help to raise £250,000 to bring this basic care to where the people are for a further year.

NEWS UPDATES

Alan Campbell, 26/03/2009
Great news from Kilsyth Action Group – they organized a special event for Brazil – i.e. dedicated offerings at local churches on one Sunday in February. They wrote letters to all the churches of all denominations encouraging them to take part – 11 churches did. Guess what? – they raised £2,275.00!!! Obviously they are very pleased and I am too!! Hope you agree.
