The hinterland 'Sertão' region covers almost all of the north-east of Brazil. Equivalent to the area of Portugal, Spain and France, it experiences frequent periods of drought.

Millions of people in this region depend on agriculture for survival but famine regularly occurs. More than 40% of the Brazilian poor live in this one region.
